The Falling City of Ondra

Active

The sky-city of Ondra has begun to descend. What does the slow fall of a floating city look like from inside?

Constraints: The fall is gradual — inches per day at first. The horror is in the slowness.

Day 1 of the fall, nobody notices. Day 7, the astronomers report that the stars have shifted by a fraction of a degree. Day 14, water in the fountains pools on the eastern side. Day 30, you can feel it in your knees when you walk downhill. Day 60, the cathedral bell rings by itself when the wind blows from the west. Day 90, the children stop playing on the eastern ramparts because the edge feels too close.

The first family to leave Ondra does so quietly, at night, with everything they can carry on a sky-skiff. They don't say goodbye. By morning, their neighbors have divided their belongings. No one calls it looting. They call it "practicality." The city hasn't fallen yet, but civility has.
